Quahog, Hard shell clams or Chowder Clams as they are known in France is a species indigenous to the West Atlantic shore (US & Canada) Transatlantic cruisers from the 1900 accidentally released live specimen in Portsmouth bay (UK) while discarding “dead” clams overboard after their ocean Crossing. The Species has since established itself and colonised area along the UK & French Atlantic coast where they are commercially harvested.
Despite their similar appearance those Quahog clams are different species from Mahogany Arctic clams harvested by hand divers in the Nordic cold water of Iceland and Norway.
Consume raw, grilled with bread crumbs and butter or in a stew or clam chowder
