White soda bread is very popular in Ulster. It’s a very fast and easy bread. We are adding a twist to the traditional bread by adding some **Bláth na Mara – Aran Island Seamix.
The seaweed in this bread gives a very subtle savoury flavour of the sea as well as being a great source of vitamins and minerals!

This bread is delicious served with butter and smoked fish or a steaming bowl of chowder or creamy Mussels.

  1. 450g self raising flour - extra to dust
  2. 1 heaped tablespoon dried seaweed flakes**
  3. 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  4. 1 teaspoon salt
  5. 320ml buttermilk- more if needed

  1. 1 Preheat the oven 180c. Add some flour to lightly coat a baking tray.
  2. 2 Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl.
  3. 3 Measure in the seaweed, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Mix well.
  4. 4 Add the buttermilk and work into the flour with a fork. The dough should feel soft but not sticky. If the mix is too wet add a spoon of flour or if it's too dry add another drop of buttermilk
  5. 5 Turn the dough on to the work top and use your hand to gently work the dough.
  6. 6 Shape it into a smooth round. Put it on the floured tray, flatten the round with the palm of your hand
  7. 7 Using a butter knife make the indent of a cross on top of the dough
  8. 8 Bake in the oven for 50 mins or until there is a hollow sound when the bottom is tapped.
  9. 9 Cool on a wire rack.
